Choroidal Nevus

A choroidal nevus is a benign pigmented lesion found beneath the retina. This common condition occurs in the eye just as a freckle or mole can occur on the skin. A choroidal nevus is usually flat, dark in color, and may vary in size. They don’t normally cause any symptoms so those who have a choroidal nevus usually don’t know until they’ve had a comprehensive eye exam.

Since a choroidal nevus is benign, treatment is not necessary. Though rare, some nevi can develop into cancer just like a skin mole. It’s important to monitor the nevus with regular eye exams and imaging to detect any changes.
