Light Adjustable Lens (LAL)
What Is It?
The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is a new advanced option that lets patients personalize and preview their vision after cataract surgery. While fixed lenses, like monofocal lenses, can provide excellent vision with a prescription set before surgery, they can’t be adjusted afterward without additional surgery. The LAL, however, offers the unique flexibility to "test-drive" and fine-tune vision after the procedure, helping to achieve even more precise results.
How Are Adjustments Made To My Vision?
After cataract surgery, a doctor will perform light treatment sessions. The doctor will take measurements of your eyes to figure out the current prescription, and uses a Light Delivery Device (LDD) to modify the light adjustable lens in your eye. Due to the special photosensitive material of the lens, exposure to UV light will change the shape of the lens without additional surgery. This is a painless and non-invasive treatment.
You will receive three to five total adjustments including two finalizing treatments to prevent any further changes. These sessions provide a chance to explore and evaluate different vision outcomes that match your specific lifestyle and preferences before selecting the prescription for your adjustable lens.
How Is This Different From Regular Cataract Surgery?
The cataract surgery itself is the same as it is with any other lens. The biggest difference is the light treatment sessions that are required after cataract surgery to fine-tune your vision. Immediately following cataract surgery, you will receive special UV-blocking sunglasses to wear until after your final adjustment session. These glasses protect the light adjustable lens from any unintended changes caused by exposure to UV light sources, whether indoors or outdoors. Wearing these glasses is a valuable investment that will provide you a potential lifetime of the best possible vision. After your final lock-in session, you will be able to take them off and enjoy your customized vision.
Who Is It For?
The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) can be a beneficial option for any patient looking to reduce their dependence on glasses. The LAL is a particularly great option for those who have had prior refractive surgery (LASIK or PRK), as our measurements in these instances are less accurate than for those who have not had prior surgery. By allowing you to preview and adjust the prescription after surgery, the LAL provides greater flexibility to help you achieve your desired vision. At Chester County Eye Care, we offer a range of vision correction options, including other lenses designed to correct astigmatism. During your cataract evaluation, your physician will explain the benefits of each lens to help determine which option best suits your needs.
What Are The Risks?
Cataract surgery, like any surgical procedure, carries certain risks. However, the implantation of a Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) involves no additional risks compared to other cataract surgery. While these risks are rare, your physician will thoroughly discuss them with you during your evaluation.
