What is Visian ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens)?
The Visian ICL is an implant like a contact lens that is placed between the iris and lens of your eye. Because there is no re-shaping of the cornea like in LASIK or PRK, the procedure is entirely reversible.
Who is a Candidate?
Not every patient is a good candidate for LASIK or PRK. If the cornea is too thin to allow for the large amounts of correction needed, the ICL may be a better option. Typically, patients with more than -8 of nearsightedness are excellent ICL candidates.
Who is not a candidate?
The ICL is approved for patients between the ages of 18-45 who have nearsightedness and/or astigmatism. It is not approved for farsightedness.
What are the risks?
Because this is an intraocular surgery, there are different risks than LASIK. There is a risk of infection, damage to the cornea, glaucoma, or cataract formation. These are rare, but need to be monitored over time.
Where is the surgery performed?
ICL implantation is done on both eyes on the same day at Vision One Surgery Center in Exton, PA.
What is the recovery?
Recovery from ICL takes a little bit longer than LASIK. You can expect your vision to be blurry for the first week, and then it should improve, similar to PRK.
